Elliot Krames, MD

Elliot S. Krames, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist who has been practicing pain medicine solely since 1982. He is a pioneer and one of the leading experts in the field of intraspinal analgesia. He is a worldwide-recognized leader and educator in the field of neuromodulation for pain control. He has written extensively on implantable technologies for pain management and has conducted national and international symposia related to this topic.

Interview with Elliot Krames, MD

The Science and NYC Neuromodulation aims to showcase the most advanced science behind brain interfacing technologies. What are most innovative or important ideas you want to share at your talk at the conference?

EK: I’ve got to say that I am totally absorbed and excited by the field of brain/machine/computer interfacing. The idea that we can harvest brain waves/thoughts and using algorithms convert those waves to mechanical energy such as mobility restoration or thought conversion to actual conversation just excites me to no end. The possibilities after fixing some of the barriers in non-ending. Brain/machine interfacing is definitely one of the futures of neuromodulation which, in turn, is, in my estimation, the future of medicine.

What are you most excited about (or looking forward to) at NTS/NYN Napa?

EK: I am excited about what will come from this meeting. We are presenting what is known about the science/mechanisms of action of differing sessions followed by presentations of new science and oral poster presentations germane to the session. The most exciting part for me is the following discussions between the presenters who are experts in their respective fields and the audience, which also contains experts in the field. I am hoping that these discussions will lead to new understandings of the science presented, leading to new and exciting research.

Why do you do this? That is, why after your retirement from clinical medicine, do you continue to help manage Neuromodulation the Science/NYC Neuromodulation?

EK: Creating the concept and vision for Neuromodulation: The Science, AKA, Electrical Stimulation of the Nervous System: Mechanisms of Action, has been one of the most rewarding endeavors of my long career. I have always known that in the past, industry and the neuromodulation societies have given short shrift and little attention to the pre-clinical science of neuromoduation, devoting more resources to the clinical science of neuromodulation. After having created Neuromodulation: Technology at the Neural Interface, the Journal of the International Neuromodulation Society and its country and regional chapters, having served as its Editor in Chief for 14 years, co-editing the book, the Textbook of Neuromodulation, and having practiced the field of pain medicine for over 35 years, I have decided to dedicate the end of my professional life to advancing the science of neuromodulation. It has been more than gratifying for me to team up with Eric Grigsby, MD of Neurovations and now, this year, with Marom Biksom, PhD of NYC Neuromodulation.
